What to write in each part
Go through the fields in this order. Elders usually read a Marathi biodata top to bottom, so the most important details should come first.
- Nameनाव
- Write the full name the Marathi way: own name, father’s name, surname. For example सई अनिल जोशी.
- Birth date, time and placeजन्म तारीख, वेळ, ठिकाण
- The exact time matters if the patrika will be matched. In Marathi, write सकाळी, दुपारी, सायंकाळी or रात्री instead of AM and PM.
- Heightउंची
- In feet and inches, like ५ फूट ३ इंच. Use either Marathi or English numerals, but use the same kind all through the page.
- Kuldaivat and gotraकुलदैवत, गोत्र
- Write the family deity with the place if it is well known, for example श्री योगेश्वरी, अंबेजोगाई. Gotra is the father’s gotra.
- Rashi, nakshatra and mangalराशी, नक्षत्र, मंगळ
- Take these from the patrika. For mangal, write होय, नाही or सौम्य मंगळ. If your family also matches gan, nadi and charan, keep the full patrika ready to send when a family asks.
- Native placeमूळ गाव
- The family’s home town or village, with the district if it is small. Many Marathi families ask this early.
- Education and workशिक्षण, व्यवसाय, उत्पन्न
- Highest degree first, then the job title and where they work. Annual income is usually written in lakhs, like ₹ १२ लाख. It is your choice whether to include it.
- Parentsवडील, आई
- Name with श्री. or सौ., and their work, for example श्री. अनिल जोशी, निवृत्त शिक्षक.
- Siblings and relativesभावंडे, मामा
- Write brothers and sisters with whether they are married. Many Marathi families also mention the mama’s (maternal uncle’s) name and town, the आजोळ. You can add this in “About my family”.
- Contactसंपर्क
- One person, usually the father or mother, and one phone number. You do not need to print the full address on the first copy you share.
Write it in Marathi, not translated English
A biodata reads best when it sounds like the family wrote it. Marathi has its own natural words for the things families want to know:
- निर्व्यसनी for someone who does not smoke or drink.
- मनमिळाऊ, कुटुंबप्रिय and शांत स्वभाव to describe nature, instead of “friendly” or “family-oriented” written in Devanagari.
- विभक्त कुटुंब for a nuclear family and एकत्र कुटुंब for a joint family.
- जोडीदाराकडून अपेक्षा for partner expectations. Keep them to two or three lines.
On SevenVows you can fill the details in English and switch the page to मराठी before you download. Names and places are written in Devanagari; read them once and correct any spelling your family prefers.
Before you share it
- Keep it to one page. Families forward it on WhatsApp and read it on phones.
- Use one recent, clear photo with a plain background.
- Check the birth time and the spelling of names with your parents.
- Ask the person it is for to read it and agree before it goes out.
