The horoscope details, one by one
Take these from the janam kundli or janma patrika. If you do not have one, your family astrologer can make it.
- Date, time and place of birthजन्म तिथि, समय, स्थान
- The exact time matters most; a few minutes can change the lagna. Write the town of birth, not where you live now.
- Rashiराशि
- The moon sign from the kundli, such as कुंभ (Kumbh). It is not the same as the sun sign in newspaper horoscopes.
- Nakshatra and charanनक्षत्र, चरण
- One of the 27 nakshatras, with the charan (pada, 1 to 4) if you know it, for example पूर्वा भाद्रपद (चरण 2).
- Gan and nadiगण, नाड़ी
- Gan is देव, मनुष्य or राक्षस; nadi is आदि, मध्य or अंत्य. On SevenVows, add them in the nakshatra line, as in the example.
- Manglikमांगलिक
- हाँ, नहीं or आंशिक (partial). This is one of the first things families check, so write it clearly.
- Gotraगोत्र
- Own gotra, and in many North Indian families the mother’s family gotra too, since many avoid a match in the same gotra.
How families use these details
Many families match kundli using the ashtakoot system, which gives up to 36 points (gun) across eight areas. Rashi and nakshatra decide most of them, which is why they matter on the biodata.
| Koot | Points | Comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Rashi |
| Vashya | 2 | Rashi |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra |
| Graha maitri | 5 | Rashi |
| Gan | 6 | Nakshatra |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Rashi |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra |
Families and astrologers differ on how many points they look for and how they weigh manglik dosh, so leave the reading to your family astrologer. The biodata only needs the details to be correct.
Before you share it
- Check the birth time against the birth certificate or the kundli itself.
- Make sure rashi and nakshatra agree: each nakshatra falls within one or two rashis.
- Keep the full kundli as a separate PDF or photo, ready to send when asked.
