What to write in each field

These are the fields families expect, in the order they usually read them.

Nameनाम

Full name with surname, as it is written on documents. Do not add titles like Mr. or Dr. here; put the degree under education.

Birth date, time and placeजन्म तिथि, समय, स्थान

Needed for kundli matching, so check the exact time with your parents. Write the time with सुबह, दोपहर, शाम or रात.

Height and dietऊँचाई, आहार

Height in feet and inches, like 5 फ़ुट 9 इंच. Diet as शाकाहारी, मांसाहारी or अंडाहारी (eggetarian).

Community and gotraसमाज, गोत्र

Write the community and sub-caste if your family uses it. For gotra, many families write their own and the mother’s family gotra: भारद्वाज (स्वयं), वशिष्ठ (ननिहाल).

Rashi, nakshatra, manglikराशि, नक्षत्र, मांगलिक

From the kundli. For manglik, write हाँ, नहीं or आंशिक मांगलिक. Keep the full kundli ready to send when a family asks.

Native placeमूल निवास

The town or village the family comes from, with the state. This is different from where you live now.

Education and workशिक्षा, व्यवसाय, वार्षिक आय

Highest degree first, then job title and the kind of company or the company name. Income is written per year in lakhs, like ₹ 18 लाख. For a family business, say what the business is.

Parentsपिता, माता

Use श्री and श्रीमती, with their work, for example श्री राजेंद्र शर्मा, सेवानिवृत्त बैंक प्रबंधक.

Siblings and family typeभाई-बहन, परिवार प्रकार

Elder or younger, and married or not. Family type is संयुक्त परिवार (joint) or एकल परिवार (nuclear).

Writing the paragraphs in Hindi

The three short paragraphs at the end, मेरे बारे में, मेरे परिवार के बारे में and जीवनसाथी से अपेक्षाएँ, are what families remember. A few things help:

• Write in simple, everyday Hindi. Two or three sentences for each is plenty.
• Describe nature and interests: सरल स्वभाव, ज़िम्मेदार, परिवार से जुड़ा हुआ.
• Leave out complexion and looks, such as गोरा or सुंदर. The photo already shows that, and many families now find it off-putting.
• Keep partner expectations kind and short: education, values, city, and anything that truly matters to you.
